At some time
in life, we all are confronted with achievements
and comparisons. When we check our social
media, talk to family, friends,
classmates or colleagues. We hold one another to certain standards when
it comes to status. The world’s view of life’s
achievements is based on one’s success. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying: “You know
you've made it when” … you've graduated from college, hold a bachelor or
master’s degree, involved with charitable
work, work a 9 am to 5 pm job, your monthly income is at least … figures, drive a range, pay the mortgage, have social stats and followers, and oh yeah travel at
least four times a year. It's funny how accumulating monetarily and material possessions
give us status, position, and even
power.
A few years back I’d found myself questioning my "status." Don’t
get me wrong it’s not a sin to want success. However, we know that God calls us
to be obedient and not successful. Many times, we fail at something in the
world’s view, but what’s most important is succeeding in obedience and righteousness.
With that being said, the bible had many successful men like Solomon and David.
Men with authority, power, wealth and possessions. God blessed them because of
their desire to serve God and His people. These men weren’t filled with
self-praise but obedience and humbleness. The question is whose approval do you crave?
Do we seek man’s approval instead of God’s? Is your mind set on the things
above (everlasting) or are you gathering worldly treasures that will eventually
fade away?
Mark 8:36 - For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his
soul?
